Catherine Black Horse is enrolled in the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and self-taught artist who is known for her original traditional dresses. When creating her dresses, Catherine uses materials dating from the nineteenth century. She regularly uses fine wool, silk, antique vegetable dye ribbons, antique brass sequins, Dentalium shells, real elk teeth ivories, and brass thimbles and hawk bells. Because the materials Catherine uses to create her dresses is rare and the detail involved in each piece, each dress and its traditional accessories takes from six months to several years to make. Catherine’s traditional dresses have won numerous awards at the most prestigious Indian art markets across the Country, including the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Market, and the Gene Autry Museum Intertribal Marketplace. Catherine remains most grateful for the opportunity to honor and highlight Native American women.
